How much and when to water the strawberry tree

The strawberry tree needs different watering depending on whether it is an adult plant or not. Normally, in fact, in the first year of life the irrigations must necessarily take place more frequently, especially in those seasons when the rains have been very scarce. As the months go by, the irrigations must decrease quite drastically. The strawberry tree, when it is adult, is very resistant to drought. Despite this the irrigations are granted exclusively in those particularly dry years, where it practically never rains and in the summer season. On average, watering must take place every 15 days. Very important is not to favor absolutely the water stagnations, feared by the strawberry tree for the irremediable damages that can come to the roots.

How to cultivate and cure the strawberry tree correctly

The strawberry tree is absolutely not a plant that needs special skills to be successfully cultivated. Ideal soils should preferably be neutral or poor, characterized by acidity, siliceous or volcanic and perfectly drained. The needs for cultivation and care are almost non-existent. Once the roots of the strawberry tree have taken root, it is, in fact, a completely autonomous plant. The multiplication takes place by seed to be carried out at the end of the winter season in a mixture of peat and sand in equal parts to keep wet until spring. Cultivation multiplication is also possible. The planting, in both cases, must take place definitively after about 2 years. First the plants must absolutely be kept sheltered or in special greenhouses.

The importance of fertilizing

Although the strawberry tree is a plant that does not need excessive care, fertilization also assumes a fairly important aspect in its cultivation. In the spring it is necessary to provide for the undergrounding of the strawberry tree with a suitable organic fertilizer. Only in this way can the plant develop perfectly. The absolutely indispensable elements are nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium, very useful for preparing the plant for the winter season. The perfect doses are those indicated on the package of the chosen fertilizer and must be respected in a very scrupulous manner. Fertilization can take place on a regular basis and, in any case, at least twice a year and exclusively in the spring season. A small watering is useful to favor the absorption of the fertilizer.

Strawberry Tree: Exposure and possible diseases

The strawberry tree should preferably be placed in sunny areas. Especially in areas with a warmer climate, the ideal location can also be represented by the semi-shade. Once it has grown up, however, the strawberry tree does not fear the cold even though cold winds are feared. The most humid ones are relatively more tolerated. In the regions of northern Italy, the best exposure is to the south, taking care to protect the plant from the cold current. The strawberry tree is very rarely a victim of disease. Those that can sometimes nest there are aphids, easily eliminated with a special pesticide. What causes much suffering to the strawberry tree is the lack of lighting, which carries mushrooms on the leaves.
